DENTAL GUIDE

How should dental implants be cared for?

Implant placement is only one stage of treatment. Following postoperative instructions and maintaining effective daily hygiene help protect the tissues around implants during healing and after the final restoration is fitted.

The first day

Instructions from the treating dentist about bleeding control, eating, rinsing and prescribed medication take priority. Avoid disturbing the surgical site. Smoking and tobacco can impair healing and should be discussed with the clinician.

Cleaning during and after healing

The timing and method of brushing near the surgical area depend on the procedure. After the final restoration, interdental brushes, floss or an oral irrigator may be recommended according to the design and access beneath the restoration.

Reviews and warning signs

Professional reviews assess the gums, hygiene, bite and restoration connections, not only whether the implant feels stable. Bleeding, swelling, unpleasant taste, mobility or new discomfort should be reported rather than waiting for a routine visit.
