Why the sinus matters
The roots of upper back teeth may be close to the maxillary sinus. After tooth loss, bone changes and sinus anatomy can reduce the height available for an implant. Panoramic and, when indicated, three-dimensional imaging help define the relationship.
Simultaneous or staged treatment
An implant and sinus augmentation may sometimes be performed at the same visit if adequate primary stability is achievable. When the remaining bone is more limited, augmentation may be completed first and the implant placed after healing.
Recovery and follow-up
Swelling and tenderness can occur after surgery. Instructions concerning oral care, medication and actions that increase sinus pressure should be followed. Review appointments allow the surgical area and the next treatment stage to be assessed.
